If you're looking for a peaceful way to enjoy Cape San Blas, grab a paddleboard and head out onto St. Joseph Bay.
There’s something special about being out on the water early in the morning when the bay is calm, and the only sounds you hear are birds overhead and your paddle dipping into the water. It's one of those experiences that instantly slows you down and reminds you why people love the Forgotten Coast so much.
One of the things I love most about paddleboarding here is that you never know what you're going to see. Dolphins are regular visitors to the bay, and it's not unusual to spot sea turtles gliding through the water. Keep your eyes open for stingrays, schools of fish, and all kinds of coastal birds, including pelicans, herons, egrets, ospreys, and bald eagles.
The water in St. Joseph Bay is often incredibly clear, especially on calm days. Looking down from your board can feel a little like floating over an aquarium.
Don't have your own paddleboard? No problem. Several local outfitters rent boards, and many will even help you get started if it's your first time. One of the most popular launch spots is Eagle Harbor at St. Joseph Peninsula State Park. The protected waters there are usually calm, making it a great place for beginners as well as experienced paddlers.
One of my favorite things about exploring the bay by paddleboard is seeing Cape San Blas from a completely different perspective. You can paddle along stretches of shoreline that are difficult to see from the road and discover quiet little corners of the cape that many visitors never experience. Depending on where you launch, you may paddle past everything from untouched natural shoreline to charming beach cottages and waterfront homes tucked along the bay.
A few quick tips before you head out: wear a life jacket, bring plenty of water, and don't forget sunscreen. Florida sunshine has a way of sneaking up on you, especially when you're surrounded by water. It's also smart to check wind and water conditions before launching, since a calm paddle out can turn into a workout on the way back if the wind picks up or a storm rolls in.
I also recommend bringing a dry bag. It's the easiest way to keep essentials like your phone, keys, snacks, and wallet protected while you're out on the water. A hat and sunglasses can make a big difference on sunny days, and if you're planning a longer paddle, you'll be glad you packed extra water. A whistle or other signaling device is a good idea, too, especially if you're venturing farther from shore.
Whether you're an experienced paddler or trying it for the first time, St. Joseph Bay is one of those places that makes paddleboarding easy to fall in love with. The water is beautiful, the wildlife is incredible, and for a little while, the rest of the world seems to disappear.
And honestly, that's what a Cape San Blas vacation is all about.
